Museo Nacional de Artes Decorativas (MNAD), Spain
MNAD (Museo Nacional de Artes Decorativas) was created in 1912 with a firm educational purpose. The collection was formed with this basis in mind, collecting artefacts which could serve as an example for artists and craftsmen. MNAD holds the largest and most significant decorative arts and industrial design collection in the country. It comprises more than 70.000 items of a wide range, including ceramics, glass, textiles, furniture, metalwork, jewellery, sculpture, paintings and photographs. Chronologically, the collection extends from Roman period (with Late Antiquity textiles and Roman glass) to avant-garde design. The European decorative arts have a special weight in the collection, but the provenances of the objects are of a great variety, including Japan, China or Turkey.
During the last 5 years, MNAD has been involved in the renewal of its conception and identity, trying to open the museum to new visitors. Now, it is working on the application of new methods of exhibition and studying the results of this innovation in the public. At the same time, MNAD has developed a large educational programme in collaboration with art schools and is participating in the European project Fantasy Design in Community (2009-2011) (http://www.fantasydesign.org/fd/), which promotes the engagement of children and young people in design.
MNAD, as end-user, will contribute in ARtSENSE with the selection of the most adequate items of the collection for the project research. MNAD will provide visual and written documentation to the project partners and will be one of the three museums in which the prototype will be tested with real visitors. MNAD has previous experiences in the evaluation of exhibitions, which will help for this research. Through the participation in this project, MNAD aims to know better how the visitors of different profiles look at the objects. Also, ARtSENSE will help to the museum to develop new tools of communication with the visitors and increase the possibilities of cooperation in the area of computer science and new technologies.
